Are porcelain tiles good for outdoor?

Are porcelain tiles good for outdoor?

The simple answer is Yes!

Porcelain is one of the most reliable tile materials for outdoor use because it’s very dense and  has low-porosity, so it resists water absorption, which is a big factor in frost performance and long-term durability outside. The same qualities also make porcelain stable through temperature changes (heat/cold cycling), which is why it’s commonly used both indoors and outdoors.

It is very important to be aware of the main properties of porcelain tiles and how to use this material correctly. To be able to choose the right surface finish of the tiles and the suitable location for these. Most people make mistakes when they choose tiles with a low anti slip rating which can't fulfill the requirements for the space.

The main characteristics for porcelain tiles

Porcelain performs very well  indoors and outdoors  based of these aspects:

  • Low water absorption → less risk of damage in freezing conditions (frost).

  • Hard-wearing surface → good resistance to abrasion and outdoor foot traffic.

  • Stable in temperature swings → suitable for sun-exposed areas as well as winter conditions.

A very important thing  for the exterior tiling is to handle the job correspondingly as installation matters, correct base and drainage, the use of an appropriate adhesive (usually S1 standard), things which have to be discussed with the builder before the job is started.

There are two types of porcelain tiles which can be used outdoors- 10mm and 20mm thick tiles. The decisive point whether to use a certain porcelain tile outside is based on the slip resistance. Slip resistance comes from the surface texture/finish and how it’s tested.

Practically porcelain tiles are used:

  • 10mm porcelain is more common indoors (adhesive fixed), but can be used outside in some designed areas if the product is rated for it or a special sealant is applied for slip resistance.

  • 20mm porcelain is mostly used for outdoors (patios/terraces) because it’s robust and works with pedestal / mortar / bedding systems — it has a special textured finish which is frequently marketed as R11 as a starting point.Multi Colour Rust Slate Outdoor

Slip rating guidance based on the location of the tiles

Here is a short explanation on  how to understand slip rating standards:

  • Indoors + shoes + mostly dry → look at R rating (often R9–R10).

  • Wet barefoot areas (wetrooms, showers, pool surrounds) → look at DIN 51097 (A/B/C).

  • UK commercial / higher-risk wet areas → if PTV is provided, 36+ wet is commonly referenced as low slip potential.

  • Outdoor patios in the UK climate → many outdoor porcelain ranges are sold as R11 for wet grip.

Based on the facts above in Uk tiles are use for:

Dry domestic areas (living rooms, bedrooms): often R9–R10

Kitchens / hallways (higher spill risk): often R10

Bathrooms floors (general): commonly R10 (and consider PTV if specified)

Wetrooms / shower floors: look for barefoot DIN 51097 “B” or “C” (because this is a barefoot/wet scenario, not a shoes scenario)

 Outdoor tiles and their specifications

     Outdoor porcelain ( mostly in 20mm / 10mm)

Patios / paths / terraces (wet weather): starting at R11 used as “non-slip” for outdoors.

Steeper slopes, ramps, commercial entrances: Often requiring higher grip (this specific areas will need a special surface—  it has to be verified with the project spec and test method).

      Tilejob recommendations:

From our experience at Tilejob we can say that in time the tiles will wear out and their slip rating will no longer be the same as it was at the minute of installation. And this is an aspect which often requires extra measures like anti slip sealant which is applied at the after installation and  over a period of time depending on the type of material.
